Situation:

In Branson, 32 people were treated at one hospital for injuries, mostly cuts and bruises. An apparent tornado moved through downtown Branson, heavily damaging the city’s famous theaters and hopscotching up Highway 76, uprooting road signs and scattering debris. The injuries could have been far worse had the storm hit next week, when the tourist season begins. “If it was a week later, it’d be a different story,” said Bill Tirone, assistant general manager for the 530-room Hilton and adjacent Branson Convention Center, where windows were shattered and some rooms had furniture sucked away by high winds. Hotel workers were able to get all guests to safety as the storm raged. John Moore, owner of the damaged Cakes-n-Creams ’50s Diner, said the apparent twister appeared to “jump side to side” as it moved down the entertainment district, right through the convention center, across a lake and into a housing division. “The theater next to me kind of exploded. It went everywhere. The hotels on the two sides of me lost their roofs. Power lines are down. Windows are blown out,” Moore said. “There’s major, major destruction. There has to be millions dollars of damage all down the strip.

Situation:

Passengers aboard a disabled cruise ship will spend 10 to 12 hours longer at sea than was needed because a French vessel pulling the ship refused to give way to tugboats, a Seychelles government minister says. Joel Morgan told The Associated Press that the cruise ship Costa Allegra likely would have arrived in the Seychelles’ main port of Mahe on Wednesday night local time if the tugs had been allowed to take over. The cruise ship instead is not set to arrive until midmorning Thursday. Morgan, the transport minister, said the Seychelles is not happy that the financial objectives of the French vessel was put ahead of the well-being and safety of the passengers. Conditions on board the disabled Costa Allegra are “regular,” Costa Cruises said Wednesday. The company said soft drinks, cold cuts, cheese and fruit are available to eat and drink, mineral water is offered for personal hygiene, and fresh bread was delivered by helicopter. Costsa Cruises said the ship has sufficient food and that a small generator delivered by a navy ship – it did not specify from which country – could help restore basic services and “to make the situation on board more comfortable.” The ship is expected to arrive in port on Thursday at about 9 a.m. local time (midnight EST), but that depends on sea conditions and towing speed. Passengers will begin flying to Rome within hours after arrival at port, Gilbert Faure, chief executive of the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority, said Wednesday. Three planes with a seating capacity of at least 580 passengers were lined up, he said. The first plane is tentatively scheduled to leave Thursday afternoon.

According to a new and yet unconfirmed report, India bought oil from Iran using gold. India certainly has the gold resources to fund the oil, while Iran is under pressure by the West, due the continuation of its nuclear program.

There were reports that officials have been floating this idea for some time, and now, as the EU finally decided upon an oil embargo on Iran, more details became available, yet still pend confirmation.

Oil is priced in US dollars, and bypassing the greenback posed challenges for both parties. Two banks are reportedly involved in this deal: India’s state owned UCO Bank and Turkey’s state owned Halkbank.

Both banks don’t have any business with the US and therefore are less vulnerable to sanctions. According to the report, an Indian delegation has spent time in Tehran and finalized the details of the transactions.

The annual capacity of trade between these two countries is 12 billion dollars. With gold trading at around $1668, that is around 7.2 million ounces of gold.

The step joins Russia and Iran’s announcement to begin trading in their own domestic currencies rather than use the US dollar – a reserve currency.

These details about the gold for oil deal come on the day that EU officials announce an oil embargo on Iran starting on July 1st. Tensions between Iran and the West are mounting and oil is already on the up.

The time it took the EU to reach the decision, and the late implementation date make it very easy for Iran to enlarge exports to oil hungry and fast growing Asian countries.

The use of gold for buying the No. 1 commodity, will likely have positive implications for the precious metal, if this report is confirmed and especially if the use of gold widens to China – the world’s No. 2 economy.
