The British Geological Survey have detected an earthquake of magnitude 3.9 at 06:59 UTC (07:59 BST) this morning (14 July 2011) located approximately 80 km south-south-east of Portsmouth, Hampshire.

Several residents from the Worthing, West Sussex, area have reported having felt this event, one describing ‘it only lasted a few seconds’.

‘This is the largest earthquake in this area, within 25 km, since a magnitude 4.5 event in 1734.

 

Historically, there have been two other significant events nearby (30–40 km away); a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in 1878 and a magnitude 4.3 earthquake in 1750.

In the UK we experience a earthquake of this magnitude approximately every two years.’

 Blackpool earthquake | Magnitude 1.5 | 27 May 2011

We have recently recorded magnitude 1.5 (27 May) and magnitude 2.3 (1 April) earthquakes in the Blackpool area near to the Preese Hall shale gas drilling site operated by Cuadrilla Resources.

The 27 May earthquake was felt by at least one person in Poulton-Le-Fylde.

Analysis of data from two temporary instruments close to the drill site, installed by BGS after the magnitude 2.3 earthquake on 1 April, places the epicentre of this event within 500 metres of the Preese Hall site and gives a depth of approximately 2 km.

The recorded waveforms are very similar to those from the magnitude 2.3 event on 1 April, which suggests that the two events share a similar location and mechanism (see Figure 2).

The location of the second earthquake is much better constrained than the event on 1 April.

In particular, the depth of 2.0 km is much better resolved, because of the availability of recordings from close to the epicentre.

However, the location is still only an estimate with errors of around +/- 1 km in both epicentre and depth.

We understand that fluid injection, between depths of 2–3 km, was ongoing at the Preese Hall site shortly before both earthquakes occurred.

The timing of the two events in conjunction with the fluid injection suggests that they may be related.

It is well-established that fluid injection can induce small earthquakes. Typically, these are too small to be felt.

‘We would not expect earthquakes of these relatively small magnitudes to cause any damage.

Further monitoring and careful analysis of any future activity is required to help understand any relationship between the injection process and nearby seismic activity.

A hurricane (or typhoon, or severe tropical cyclone), the strongest storm on Earth, is a cyclonic (rotary) storm that derives its energy from cloud formation and rainfall. This is unlike mid-latitude storms that derive their power from a temperature gradient. The strongest hurricanes release energy the equivalant of one 10-megaton nuclear bomb exploding every 20 minutes. A hurricane begins as a tropical depression with a sustained wind speed of less than 39 mph (35 knots; 63 km/hr). As the system strengthens, it becomes a tropical storm with winds from 39 to 73 mph (35-63 knots; 63-118 km/hr). Tropical storms are named in the Atlantic, East, Central and Northwest Pacific, in the South Indian Ocean, and in the Arabian Sea. When the winds are sustained (based on a one-minute average) at 74 mph (64 knots; 119 km/hr), the storm becomes: In the Atlantic Ocean, East Pacific, Central Pacific (east of the International Dateline) and Southeast Pacific (east of 160°E) a Hurricane; in the Northwest Pacific (west of the International Dateline) a Typhoon; in the Southwest Pacific (west of 160°E) and Southeast Indian Ocean (east of 90°E) a Severe Tropical Cyclone; in the North Indian Ocean a Severe Cyclonic Storm; and in the Southwest Indian Ocean (west of 90°E) a Tropical Cyclone.

In New Jersey, more than 800,000 customers were without power on Sunday, and the state’s largest utility, Public Service Electric and Gas, estimated it could take a week to restore electricity to all of its customers. In Connecticut, 670,000 customers had lost power – roughly half the state – which surpassed power failures caused by Hurricane Gloria in 1985. Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said more than 300 roadways were blocked, but he warned that dire problems were still to come, particularly along the Delaware, Ramapo and Passaic Rivers. “The real issue that we are going to have to deal with now is flooding,” Mr. Christie said.

Situation:

A landslide triggered by rainfall this morning killed about 35 people after it buried 16 families in Kimuli village at Bumwidisi hills, Sisiyi sub-county on the slopes of Mount Elgon. The landslide cut in between Namwadisi hill in Kimuli village, Mabono parish killing the members of eight families and leaving more than nine other houses in the neighbourhood living in danger of another impending landside anytime. The landslide that occurred at about 3 am this morning left mud, debris and an estimated 14 people still buried under the rubble while about 28 had been restrieved by 9 am by a local task force led by the LCV chairman Mr Simon Wananzofu and Uganda Redcross. The chairman of Kimuli village, Mr Jacob Nasami identified the dead as Mr Lodovico Masiga, 71, his wife Mrs Janet Masiga 68, their grand child Moses Namasi 22, Mr Alex Nanoga, 35, his wife Angella Nanoga 26 and their two children, Mr Joseph Nambazi 32, his four children while his wife Ms Sarah Nambazi and other people are still missing as rescue efforts continued. “There are others we cant know especially children most of whom where aged between one to five months and I think government must relocate these people. We have been making appeals but government has never responded and I think this time they should,” said Mr Nasami. The rescue crew armed with sticks, hoes, spades searched the mud-ravaged village of Kimuli some still hoping to find survivors while others facing the daunting task of finding the bodies buried under the heavy mudslides. And from a distance Kimuli village, the buried village looks like freshly-graded construction site, nothing can be seen apart from the remains of the houses, wood seen poking through the clay soil and debris everywhere. Except for remnants of the iron sheets; wattle, stones, a few remains of the clothes in the gardens and other debris scattered every where, everything has been buried; the surroundings look an abandoned place.
