State/Prov.: State of New Jersey

Description:

In New Jersey, more than 800,000 customers were without power on Sunday, and the state’s largest utility, Public Service Electric and Gas, estimated it could take a week to restore electricity to all of its customers. In Connecticut, 670,000 customers had lost power – roughly half the state – which surpassed power failures caused by Hurricane Gloria in 1985. Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said more than 300 roadways were blocked, but he warned that dire problems were still to come, particularly along the Delaware, Ramapo and Passaic Rivers. “The real issue that we are going to have to deal with now is flooding,” Mr. Christie said.

Event: Landslide
Location: Uganda Eastern Uganda Bulambuli District

Number of Deads: 35 person(s)

Situation:

A landslide triggered by rainfall this morning killed about 35 people after it buried 16 families in Kimuli village at Bumwidisi hills, Sisiyi sub-county on the slopes of Mount Elgon. The landslide cut in between Namwadisi hill in Kimuli village, Mabono parish killing the members of eight families and leaving more than nine other houses in the neighbourhood living in danger of another impending landside anytime. The landslide that occurred at about 3 am this morning left mud, debris and an estimated 14 people still buried under the rubble while about 28 had been restrieved by 9 am by a local task force led by the LCV chairman Mr Simon Wananzofu and Uganda Redcross. The chairman of Kimuli village, Mr Jacob Nasami identified the dead as Mr Lodovico Masiga, 71, his wife Mrs Janet Masiga 68, their grand child Moses Namasi 22, Mr Alex Nanoga, 35, his wife Angella Nanoga 26 and their two children, Mr Joseph Nambazi 32, his four children while his wife Ms Sarah Nambazi and other people are still missing as rescue efforts continued. “There are others we cant know especially children most of whom where aged between one to five months and I think government must relocate these people. We have been making appeals but government has never responded and I think this time they should,” said Mr Nasami. The rescue crew armed with sticks, hoes, spades searched the mud-ravaged village of Kimuli some still hoping to find survivors while others facing the daunting task of finding the bodies buried under the heavy mudslides. And from a distance Kimuli village, the buried village looks like freshly-graded construction site, nothing can be seen apart from the remains of the houses, wood seen poking through the clay soil and debris everywhere. Except for remnants of the iron sheets; wattle, stones, a few remains of the clothes in the gardens and other debris scattered every where, everything has been buried; the surroundings look an abandoned place.

Hurricane Katia to Hit UK

Posted by on 12:28 am in Home, Weather Stuff | Comments Off

Hurricane Katia Forcast & Tracking Maps

Hurricane Katia Map 1

Hurricane Katia is now heading for The UK and Ireland, and is expected to reach Ireland by Monday September 12 and Britain by Tuesday September 13, as it is now off the coast of Bermuda.

Forecasters say places set to be the most affected by the remnants of the hurricane are likely to be the islands off Scotland with torrential rains expected to batter parts of the coastline.

With waves expected to reach 50ft and winds of 10mph, a severe weather warning has now been issued for Scotland, Ireland, Northern England, West Wales, and Cornwall and Devon and the Met Office has warned of traffic disruption and structural damage.

What to do in Severe Weather

Here are the advices the Met office recommend to follow in case of severe weather :

Before the storm

  • Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture or anything else that could be blown into windows and other glazing and break them.
  • Close and securely fasten doors and windows, particularly those on the windward side of the house, and especially large doors such as those on garages.
  • Park vehicles in a garage, if available; otherwise keep them clear of buildings, trees, walls and fences.
  • Close and secure loft trapdoors with bolts, particularly if roof pitch is less than 30°.
  • If the house is fitted with storm shutters over the windows then ensure that these are closed and fastened.
  • If chimney stacks are tall and in poor condition, move beds away from areas directly below them.

During the storm

  • Stay indoors as much as possible.
  • If you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees.
  • Keep away from the sheltered side of boundary walls and fences – if these structures fail, they will collapse on this side.
  • Do not go outside to repair damage while the storm is in progress.
  • If possible, enter and leave your house through doors in the sheltered side, closing them behind you.
  • Open internal doors only as needed, and close them behind you.
  • Take care when driving on exposed routes such as bridges, or high open roads, delay your journey or find alternative routes if possible.
  • Slow down and be aware of side winds, particular care should be taken if you are towing or are a high sided vehicle.
  • Do not drive unless your journey is really necessary

After the storm

  • Be careful not to touch any electrical/telephone cables that have been blown down or are still hanging.
  • Do not walk too close to walls, buildings and trees as they could have been weakened.
  • Make sure that any vulnerable neighbours or relatives are safe and help them make arrangements for any repairs.

New Banksy Graffiti Appears On London Street

New Banksy Graffiti Appears On London Street

Banksy has apparently created a new piece of artwork in a London street – as builders in Australia destroyed his iconic parachuting rat.

The new graffiti shows a little boy kneeling at a sewing machine while he makes bunting that for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.

The child is barefoot, with a sports visor turned backwards on his head, and his little fingers are threading the bunting through the sewing machine.

It has been suggested that the street art, drawn on Wood Green High Road in North London, is intended to highlight the disparity between the wealth and opulence of the West and the poverty – and the age – of those who are used to make the goods bought there.

Meanwhile, in Australia, a piece of Banksy artwork valued at around \$50,000 (£31,100) has been accidentally destroyed by builders.

The parachuting rat was painted about 15 years ago on a wall in Prahran in Melbourne and has been a proud fixture of the area ever since.

However, it was ruined when builders smashed a hole so that they could put new pipes into the building.

Resident Tina McKenzie told ABC News Australia: “They’ve sawn into the side of the building without actually saying anything.

“But then, that’s builders… they wouldn’t even think.”

Ms McKenzie has had dealings with Banksy, and said she was going to send him an email to say a TV crew had been out to film the incident.

When asked what he would do she said: “Well, he would probably laugh that there’s so much attention around something that he’s just done as a part of his lifestyle every day!”

The Cabinet of Natural Curiosities: Bonhams introduces an original Natural History auction

Posted by on 9:19 pm in Home, Meteorites & Space | 0 comments

NEW YORK — Bonhams is pleased to announce the June 4 auction The Cabinet of Natural Curiosities. Popular during the Renaissance, cabinets of curiosity, also known as Kunstkammer (“art-room”) or Wunderkammer (“wonder-room”), were the personal and often idiosyncratic collections of individual with the main function being to provoke a sense of curiosity and wonder in the viewer.

Bonhams introduces an original Natural History auction

Tom Lindgren, Bonhams Natural History Co-Consulting Director, states about the sale, “”This is the first time Bonhams has presented an auction of this kind. Natural curiosities such as fossils, meteorites, petrified wood and mineral specimens are now collected not only for their scientific interest but also for their stunning decorative qualities. They represent contemporary equivalents to the contents of the Victorian library, providing prestige to the contemporary home or office.”

Fossil highlights include an historic marine reptile (Ichthyosaurus communis) of the Jurassic discovered in the 1930′s, from an English public school collection (pre sale est. $50,000 – 60,000.) Complete and without restoration, its dolphin-like bodyline and beautiful articulation were enhanced by re-preparation by a former chief preparator from the British Natural History Museum. The specimen is 195 million years old.

A petrified wood slab, suitable for use as a tabletop, is estimated to sell for $50,000-60,000. Measuring 90 x 64 inches, it displays the brilliant swirling red colours for which the finest specimens from the Chinle Formation of Arizona is known. A separate lot in the sale offers a table base which may be used with this petrified wood lot.

A magnificent 51-milion-year-old fossil palm frond, found embedded in limestone matrix of unusual rust-apricot coloration, is estimated at $40,000 – 50,000. Framed in exotic wenge wood and fitted with a cleat, it can easily be displayed on a wall of standard construction. From the famed Green River Formation in Wyoming, palm fronds are considered rare finds. A rare predatory fish (Amia) from the same geologic formation, accompanied by several other fish species, is offered as a wall mural framed in wenge wood and fitted for wall display. Superb in its quality and preparation, its estimate is $15,000 – 20,000.

Particularly novel items include a crescent knife blade with a fossil fish inclusion (pre sale est. $30,000 – 40,000), an historic piece of glass from an observation window in the facility that produced the atomic bomb which was dropped on Nagasaki (pre sale est. $10,000 – 12,500) and an agate specimen shaped like a child’s foot (pre sale est. $1,000 – 1,250.)

A dramatic fossilised “sea lily,” a marine Jurassic animal which looks like a plant with a long stem and large flower, from the famous shales of Holzmaden, Germany, is offered for $18,000 – 24,000. It is naturally embedded in richly coloured gray-black shale; the fossil glimmers with the subtle mineral replacement of pyrite. Also, an exceptional fossilised woolly mammoth tusk, displaying covetable blue-green coloration, is offered at $8,000 – 10,000. Displaying a graceful curve, its rich colours were produced by burial in the permafrost in which it lay entombed since the last Ice Age.

Dinosauria lots include a spectacular Triceratops brow horn (estimate: $15,000-20,000) which represents a feature most definitive of the famous dinosaur genus. Other lots include a mounted Psittacosaurus skeleton (a ceratopsian related to Triceratops), estimated at $12,000-15000 and a Triceratops horn (pre-sale est. $2,500-3,500).

A highly varied selection of over 25 meteorites will also be offered with estimates ranging from under $1,000 to $13,000.

More than ten lots of amber and copal – fossilised tree resin from prehistoric rainforests – will be offered; estimates range from $500 – 2,500. Many of these specimens feature fascinating insect inclusions such as an assassin bug, mammal hair, a tadpole and an ant wrapped in spider web.

Description:

A NUCLEAR reactor at Torness power station in East Lothian activated its safety system to close itself down at the weekend – nearly a week ahead of a scheduled “MOT”.But last night power company EDF Energy said that while one of its two reactors going offline at the plant near Dunbar was unplanned, there was no cause for public concern.A company spokeswoman said she was not yet able to release details of why the reactor went offline on Sunday.Planned maintenance involving a team of up to 500 staff will now be brought forward and take place this week.A spokeswoman for the company, which owns and operates eight power stations in the UK, including Hunterston in Ayrshire, said: “Torness R2 came offline yesterday (13 May). It was unplanned, however we may take the opportunity to begin the planned statutory outage, which was due to begin on 19 May, a few days early.”The National Grid is responsible for “balancing” the electricity going out from power plants across the country and there is not believed to be any threat to supplies.Torness began generating electricity in 1988 but is due to be decommissioned in 2023.Dr Richard Dixon, green group WWF Scotland director, said: “Nuclear power has once again proven itself to be unreliable. We should all be thankful that Scotland has grown its renewable energy capacity enough to be able to deal with Torness nuclear power station going offline without warning.“As we tap into ever more of our huge renewable resource we look forward to the day Scotland can switch off nuclear power for good.”Last June, both reactors at the plant were shut down after “high volumes” of jellyfish were found on seawater filter screens.

Sunbathing one day, snowstorm the next: Bosnians are getting whiplash from the latest crazy weather to hit the Balkans.Weeks after Bosnians had stashed away their winter clothes and their memories of last winter’s unbearably heavy snow, residents had to drag out the shovels Monday after waking up to a blanket of snow in the middle of an otherwise unusually hot May.Some 50 remote villages in a mountainous area near the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo lost power due to the snow. The unseasonal weather followed a week of summer-like temperatures with 27 C (80.6 Fahrenheit) registered in Sarajevo on Saturday.Temperatures hit 5 Celsius (41 Fahrenheit) on Monday, causing traffic jams as people struggled to get to work. The cold spell is forecast to last until at least the middle of the week, when the snow is expected to be replaced by heavy rain.rn

Seven Formula One personnel were taken to hospital, and 31 tended to by circuit doctors, after a fire gutted the Williams garage while the team were celebrating winning Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix. The former champions had earlier gathered outside the Circuit de Catalunya garage for a team photograph to mark Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado’s first career victory and their first in nearly eight years.Team founder and principal Frank Williams, who is in a wheelchair, had been in the garage when it filled with smoke and flames but was quickly wheeled to safety, his daughter Claire told Reuters. The blaze was fought by staff from Williams, Caterham and Force India from the pit lane side before circuit fire services arrived. The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) said in a statement that all but seven of the 31 team members who went to the Circuit Medical Centre had been released. The seven were transferred to local hospitals for treatment.Williams said the fire had “originated from the fuel area” and three of their staff were in hospital.”The team, the fire services and the police are working together to determine the root cause of the fire and an update statement will be released in due course,” Williams added.Caterham, who have an adjacent garage to Williams, said four of their staff had been taken to the medical centre for examination – one with a minor hand injury and three with respiratory issues.Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley said one of his staff had suffered smoke inhalation. The fire, with thick, acrid black smoke billowing out of the garage and across the paddock, started about 90 minutes after the end of the race.Maldonado was photographed carrying his 12-year-old cousin piggyback through the smoke, with the youngster clutching the winner’s trophy.Photographs also showed Brazilian Bruno Senna’s car in the middle of a gutted and charred garage. Maldonado’s had been parked elsewhere under post-race parc ferme rules.Team officials and guests were ushered to safety and the area cordoned off. A medical helicopter was seen to take off after a while. The fire was the second in the Formula One paddock in five races this season, with one breaking out in the Lotus hospitality area at the Malaysian circuit in March.

Description:

Heavy rainstorms have battered several areas in Southern China, destroying houses and cropland. The rain comes after China’s national observatory upgraded the warning level from blue to yellow for a new round of rainstorms over the next few days.Torrential rains have affected South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Several cities, including the capital city Nanning, have issued their first red alert for torrential rain this year. The rain inundated roads and damaged old buildings in several cities. In Hunan province, local authorities say torrential rains have affected the lives of more than 1.9 million people and forced the relocation of almost 80,000 people.Elsewhere, Jiangxi Province was also hit by heavy rains, as the water in some rivers rose above warning levels. In Shicheng city, 84 houses were destroyed and over 1,500 hectares of crop land were inundated. Local authorities have evacuated more than 3,000 people, and continued to monitor the possible geological disasters. Finally, the continued rain raised the water level of a hydro power station in Nanping city, in Fujian Province. It forced the station to empty some of the water, in order to guard against possible heavy rain in the coming days.

Description:

A 13-year-old boy has died in hospital days after five of his siblings were killed in a house fire in Derby.Duwayne Philpott and his brothers and sisters were asleep upstairs at their Allenton home when the blaze began.Their father Mick Philpott, who is believed to have 17 children, made “valiant attempts” to save them.Police are treating the fire on Friday as suspicious. A man, 38, and woman, 28, have been bailed after being held on suspicion of murder.Jade Philpott, 10, and her brothers John, nine, Jack, seven, Jessie, six, and Jayden, five, all died when the fire started on Victory Road in the early hours.Duwayne had received treatment at Birmingham Children’s hospital, before his life support machine was switched off overnight.Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill said: “I am sad to confirm the news that Duwayne has died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the fire.”My deepest sympathies go out to Mr and Mrs Philpott at this distressing time.”A spokesman from Birmingham Children’s Hospital said: “Despite the intensive care team’s greatest efforts, the injuries that Duwayne received in the fire were too great for him to survive.”Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”Mr Cotterill said on Sunday that police had not had the opportunity to speak to Mr and Mrs Philpott because they had been caring for their son.He said police would like to speak to anyone who was in or around Victory Road between 03:00 BST and 04:00 BST on Friday.”I want to thank the local community who have already come forward but I would urge anyone with any information, regardless of how insignificant you think it may be, to contact us,” he said.Mr Cotterill also asked people to let police know if they spotted anything on social media sites that might aid the investigation.”Please tell us what is being said. We don’t necessarily get to know all of that,” he said.”If you’ve got access to Facebook and you see something there that you think is going to be important to us, please come forward.”The family were the subject of media scrutiny in 2006 when Mr Philpott asked the council for a larger house to accommodate his wife, girlfriend and 14 children. In 2007, ex-Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe spent a week living with the family as part of an ITV documentary and Mr Philpott also appeared as a guest on the channel’s Jeremy Kyle Show.On Saturday, prayers were said for the children at a special service in Derby and a candlelit vigil was held.People on the estate where the family lived said they had set up an online charity to help with funeral costs and anything else the family may need.
