2013-02-17 13:28:24 – Nuclear Event – United Kingdom

EDIS Code: NC-20130217-38233-GBR
Date&Time: 2013-02-17 13:28:24 [UTC]
Continent: Europe
Country: United Kingdom
State/Prov.: Scotland,
Location: The area was not defined, HMS Tireless Nuclear Submarine,
City:

Not confirmed information!

Description:

HMS Tireless was taking part in a training exercise for new officers off the west coast 10 days ago when a problem developed in its ageing 30-year-old reactor system. The 4,800 tonne Trafalgar-class submarine was ordered to limp back to Faslane naval base on the Clyde, where engineers inspected the leak. She has now returned to her home base at Devonport and faces up to 10 months in dry dock while repair work is carried out. The incident has reduced the hunter-killer fleet to five subs instead of the recommended seven plus a spare needed to carry out vital duties, including protecting the UK’s Trident missile-carrying Vanguard subs. Of those five, HMS Astute, Britain’s brand new L1.2billion attack sub which ran aground off Skye in 2010, is still not fully operational, and at least one other is undergoing maintenance.

A few people asking about winter storm Nemo that hit the USA coming to the UK (i’m assuming there must have been the usual bogus stories in the tabloid press today).

It is true to a certain extent, HOWEVER, it will NOT be the same type of system that it was in the USA. When it hit the USA, it became entrenched in cold air. It has now tracked along the Atlantic ocean, with its far milder waters, a…nd is therefore now a warm system. It will run into colder air across the UK, and is likely to give a spell of snow later on Wednesday to Northern and some Eastern parts of the UK, more especially upland areas in Scotland, and The Pennines, but it will eventually turn to rain as we see some less cold air move in from the Atlantic for a time, and we will be seeing nowhere near the snowfall amounts experienced in the North-Eastern states. We are, however, keeping an eye on the snowfall potential for Northern England from this as it looks likely to co-incide with the evening rush hour. So, to summarise. The same low pressure that brought the recent winter storm to the USA is moving towards us, and may bring a spell of snow as it hits the colder air in place across the UK, but it is not the same system that was responsible for the many inches of snow that occurred there. A temporary spell of snow before turning to rain later on Wednesday. I hope that helps to clear things up, and I can only apologise that we have such sensationalist media in the UK

Event: Vehicle Accident
Location: Vauxhall Wandsworth Road Greater London, England United Kingdom

Number of Deads: 2 person(s)
Number of Injured: 0 person(s)
Number of Evacuated: 0 person(s)
Number of Infected: 0 person(s)

Situation:

Two people died when a helicopter collided with a crane close to Vauxhall train station in central London during the morning rush hour, reports Scotland Yard. Two people were also injured in the incident and have been taken to hospital. Authorities have confirmed that one of the dead was onboard the helicopter at the time of the crash. The London Fire Brigade says two vehicles and an unknown number of people were involved in the incident. London authorities told Reuters that although the investigation is in the early stages, there is “no suggestion of terrorism.” A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said 22 fire rescue units were currently involved in a “large response.” The crane that the helicopter collided with is now hanging off the side of an adjacent tower block, witnesses wrote on Twitter. Police have cordoned off the area as the crane is currently said to be in a “precarious position.” Reports on Twitter also described gridlocked traffic around the crash site blocking the entry of emergency service vehicles. Wandsworth Road, which runs past Vauxhall Station, has been closed in both directionsand people are being evacuated from the surrounding area. The helicopter may have been flying to or from nearby Battersea Heliport, media reports suggested.

A picture posted on Twitter purporting to show the scene of the crash.

Freezing temperatures have hit much of Scotland and the rest of the UK, shutting schools and causing transport problems on rail networks. An elderly Scottish man was found dead by his partner in freezing conditions. Robert Johnston, 79, was discovered outside Monifieth high school in Angus on Wednesday at around 5am, according to the Daily Record. The death was not being treated as suspicious. More than 50 schools have been affected by snow and ice in the north-east. Two schools in Aberdeenshire were closed and 50 more either closed to pupils having to travel or changed the usual transport routes. Train services were affected for a second day in the south of England, with those travelling into London from Essex the worst hit. A broken-down train at Colchester and a signal problem near Gidea Park in east London led to delays, while equipment problems caused holdups between Reading and London, and a signalling problem led to delays between Norwich and Ely in East Anglia. There was also disruption through Birmingham New Street and the Metropolitan line on the London Underground. Temperatures plummeted on Wednesday night, dropping to -13C in some areas of the UK and causing traffic problems in the snow and ice. Forecasters warned that rain was likely to fall onto cold roads in many areas on Thursday morning creating further icy conditions, while more severe weather was on its way. Four of the six regions in Scotland are under the “be prepared” snow warning.

18 In Hospital after Toxic Fumes Leak from a Cargo Ship in County Downs

Eighteen people are being treated in hospital after toxic fumes leaked from a cargo ship in County Down. A 50-metre exclusion zone is in place around the vessel, in Warrenpoint harbour, as police and emergency crews investigate the leak. People nearby have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed. A Northern Ireland ambulance service spokesman said: “We have 18 patients. It is a chemical incident on a ship. Nine are en route to Daisy Hill hospital and nine are at the scene, and they will be transferred to Craigavon area hospital.” There are fears that aluminium phosphyde gas leaked out after the cargo of the ship became wet and therefore unstable. Five people are suffering the effects of exposure to the gas. Because the harbour is close to the Irish Republic, the security operation involves the Garda Síochána as well as the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Aluminium phosphyde is a pesticide used to kill small mammals such as moles and rodents.
